She is serving 15 years to life for a 2022 high-speed car crash that killed her boyfriend and a friend. The case recently re-entered the national spotlight following the release of the Netflix documentary "The Crash," which re-examined the evidence and featured the first televised interviews with Shirilla and her parents.During Mackenzie Shirilla's trial, the defence argued that she may have suffered a medical episode related to Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS), a condition that can cause symptoms such as dizziness, light headed, rapid heartbeat, and in some cases fainting. The defence suggested that a loss of consciousness or medical impairment could have contributed to the crash.However, the trial court was not persuaded by that argument. The judge concluded that the evidence presented did not support the claim that a POTS-related episode caused the collision. The court instead relied on other evidence presented during the trial, including vehicle data, surveillance footage, accident reconstruction testimony, and witness evidence, in reaching its findings. The court ultimately determined that the crash was intentional rather than the result of a medical emergency.In later interviews and documentaries, Mackenzie's family, including her father Steve Shirilla, continued to argue that important information was overlooked or not given sufficient weight.
